![]() ![]() Matt Stagg of Suvudu wrote, "With its warring empires and mix of aristocrat officers, fixers, scientists, and low-born grunts, Admiral reminded me of an earlier wave of science-fiction," citing authors like Larry Niven, Isaac Asimov, and Harry Harrison, as well as the role-playing game Traveller. Written from the first person point of view, Admiral combines military science fiction with elements of mystery and horror. As the danger of their predicament increases, they must put aside their varying degrees of mistrust for the mysterious Admiral if they want to survive. ![]() ![]() A fourth pod supposedly holds an Admiral, but the man they awaken does not seem like any military officer they have ever encountered before. Traveling in sleeper pods to their first assignment on the Imperial flagship, new recruits Deilani, Salmagard, and Nils wake to find themselves on a strange, dying ship. A mix of mystery, horror, and science fiction, the novel follows four strangers stranded on a mysterious planet who must work together to stay alive. ![]() The reviews stuck out because of how vehemently they chastised the author, but also because the criticism they had of Mitchell’s book could just as easily be applied to ours. While browsing the reviews for “Tao Te Ching: A New English Version,” by Stephen Mitchell, a series of extremely negative comments caught my eye. ![]() Our version has yet to receive any reviews of its own, and I’m very interested in seeing what type of praise and (more notably) criticism we might expect once the feedback starts trickling in. ![]() ![]() Since the recent publication of our version of the Tao Te Ching, I’ve been self-consciously eyeing up many of the other versions that are available next to ours in the Kindle Store.Ĭomparing the actual wordings of these other versions to our own has been enjoyable, but I’ve also spent some time exploring the reviews - both positive and negative - that have been left on Amazon by readers. ![]() ![]() The lovely Elizabeth Eulberg will forever have a large chunk of my heart as well as an immense amount of gratitude for making me a shiny star. ![]() ![]() More thanks to the whole team at Little, Brown for the super smooth production process and the stellar launch.Īs always, thanks to Jodi Reamer-my very dangerous agent-who makes my life 100% easier on a daily basis. I also didn’t know that sometimes, when a book is just one or two pages over a total number of pages that is a multiple of 16, “unnecessary” things get cut so that the printer doesn’t waste a ton of blank paper. Did you know that the pages of books are printed in big sheets that cut into 16 pages each? A spread ends the book by giving factual information for each of the trains depicted, further enhancing the book’s appeal to train enthusiasts. The simple text is straightforward without letting the rhyme become cloying: “G is for Glacier Express,/a scenic, alpine glide./H is for Hurricane Turn./Wave a flag to catch a ride.” Each train is featured on its own page, allowing the page turns to reveal the next type of train. St Joseph's University (Brooklyn Voices Series)Ī cheerful rhyming text and painterly illustrations created in Adobe Photoshop offer young readers a different train for each letter of the alphabet. ![]() ![]() ![]() I quickly became so absorbed in the story I was late going back to work. Since it was more comfortable to read the lightweight paperback than the thick copy of Anna Karenina, I started the first chapter of Dead Until Dark as I sipped my smoothie on my lunch break. I reveled in the freedom to read anything I want after years of being inundated by journal articles and dense academic texts. The title caught my eye, and though I thought the cover art was a bit silly, the blurb on the back sounded fun and I thought it might balance out the serious and sad classic of Russian Lit I’d already selected. I picked up the paperback on a whim while standing in line to buy Anna Karenina at The Dusty Bookshelf, my local used bookstore. I discovered The Sookie Stackhouse series (back when it was the Southern Vampire Mysteries and before it was True Blood) entirely on accident. ![]() ![]() Forster has finished his first novel but does not like the title.
